I received this design award from Curtis Mathes Jr. in the first of the new year in 1983, the time I spent under his guidance of the company was amazing. When I stated working for the company Curtis had recently become chairman of the board and was the public face of the company, appearing in its commercials and carrying forward the legacy of the Mathes family. Despite his responsibilities, he took me under his wing. He didn’t have to — but he did. In those few short months, I learned more about leadership, design integrity, and the spirit of the company than any classroom could have taught me.
His sudden passing on June 2, 1983, in the Air Canada Flight 797 tragedy, was a loss felt deeply throughout the company and across the industry. He was only 54. For me, it was the loss of a mentor who had already shaped the direction of my career.
Even now, decades later, I carry forward the lessons he shared — about craftsmanship, about treating people with respect, and about taking pride in the work you put into the world. Those early months at Curtis Mathes set the foundation for everything that followed in my professional life.

The Model B631F represents an era when home entertainment was crafted with the same care and pride as the finest furniture in the home. Designed as both a sophisticated color television receiver and a complete entertainment center, this remarkable console featured a 25-inch color television enhanced by Electronic Selective Sensor Tuning, Automatic Brightness Control, Instant Touch Tuning, and a Negative Guard Black Matrix picture tube with tinted phosphors for exceptional viewing quality.
The system further elevated the home entertainment experience through an integrated AM-FM receiver, built-in eight-track recorder-player, multi-speed record changer, and an Audio Coupler that allowed television sound to be enjoyed through the stereo system. Rich, room-filling sound was delivered through dual 8-inch woofers and dual 3½-inch tweeters, satisfying even the most discerning music and television enthusiast.
Equally impressive was the cabinet itself, a striking example of French Provincial-inspired craftsmanship. Finished in elegant ivory white with luxurious gilded accents, dramatically styled speaker grilles, graceful architectural proportions, and finely detailed ornamentation, the console was transformed into a statement piece worthy of the finest château-inspired interiors.
